- Crew onboard the flight had reported major turbulence some forty miles from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport
- According to a couple on board, the turbulence caused ‘serious head injuries’ and ‘blood and awfulness’
- 11 people had to be transported to hospital earlier today following the incident
At least 11 passengers had to be hospitalized after a Delta flight from Italy to Atlanta was hit by major turbulence.
The flight, from Milan to the Georgia city, ‘experienced severe turbulence’ just before landing according to records on Flight Aware.
Delta said the plane had 151 passengers and 14 crew aboard and that the airline provided accommodations to passengers and crew who were not injured.
According to Delta, the 11 people injured were a mixture of both passengers and crew.
A couple who had been onboard the flight told Fox5: ‘Looked to be about 12 people with serious head injuries. Several flight attendants, too. Bunch of blood and awfulness.
‘My fiancée and I are so freaked out, we are renting a car and driving to our final destination instead.’
The couple said all passengers were kept onboard for an additional two hours while those who were injured were triaged.
The flight landed at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport after initially reporting the turbulence 40 miles northeast of the airport, according to Alive.
In a statement, the airline said: ‘Delta Care Team members are mobilizing to connect with customers on Delta Flight 175 that experienced severe turbulence before landing safely in Atlanta Tuesday.
‘Our priority is taking care of our customers and crew who sustained injuries. We are grateful for the first responders who met the aircraft to provide medical attention and who are transporting the injured to [the] hospital.’
