Man dead after shots fired outside Merritt police station

B.C.'s police watchdog is investigating a file in Merritt after a shots were fired outside the local police station, leaving one man dead.

B.C.’s Independent Investigations Office is investigating after shots were fired outside the RCMP station in Merritt, leaving one man dead.

Around 4:43 p.m. on Saturday, a man pulled up into a parking lot next to the detachment and got out of the vehicle.

The sound of gunfire could be heard and police ran outside from their office. When they saw the armed man, the officers took cover.

A short time later, the man was found dead. No one else was injured.

The area was cordoned off for an investigation, and the Independent Investigations Office is investigating whether police action or inaction are linked to the man’s death.

No further information was made available including whether any the Mounties fired their weapons.
