An Indian immigration agent accused of providing fake college admission letters to international students is scheduled to make his next court appearance in February.
Brijesh Mishra, 37, has spent six months in custody after he was arrested in June by Canada Border Services Agency officers. He faces four federal charges under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, with three dating back as early as 2016 in Jalandhar, India, and the remaining one from this year in Surrey, B.C.
Mishra allegedly misrepresented himself as a licensed immigration consultant and advised international students between Jan. 1, 2016 and Feb. 12, 2020, NCM reported in July.
He is expected to remain in jail until his arraignment scheduled for Feb. 9 at Vancouver Provincial Court. At such hearings, those accused are asked to enter a plea of guilty or not guilty.
“Mr. Mishra is in custody since he has not sought his release on bail and has consented to his detention,” a spokesperson for the Public Prosecution Service of Canada wrote in an email to NCM.
