NARCITY/While Canada’s travel restrictions like the border closure with the U.S. are in effect, people can still fly to our neighbouring country and Justin Trudeau explained why.

He shed some light on why Canadians are able to travel there by air even though the land border is closed and basically the U.S. is to blame.

The American government took a position on land borders that they haven’t taken in terms of air travel.

Trudeau said that arrivals in other countries whether by land, air or sea are managed by those countries.

He explained that the border closure rule is that Canadians can’t drive into the U.S. and Americans can’t drive into Canada.

“Americans not driving into Canada or flying into Canada is a decision that the Canadian government took,” he said.

Trudeau noted that the U.S. government hasn’t taken a position on air travel like they did with land travel and “that is their decision.”

Meanwhile, his government’s decision was to be “consistent and strong” with travel regulations.

Canada has been asking people to not leave the country for non-essential reasons for months and has put a rule into place that requires a negative COVID-19 test for anyone flying here.
