It’s no secret that with the rise in the cost of living across Canada, many residents are pinching their pockets, saving where they can, when they can.

For Canadians struggling amidst the rising cost of rentgrocery prices and day-to-day necessities, a handful of government benefits and credits are available in 2024. It’s recommended that Canadians verify their eligibility as they could be entitled to thousands of dollars next year.

From the Canada Workers Benefit and the Canada Child Benefit to the Canada Pension Plan and Old Age Security, to name a few, Canadians can expect payments starting as early as January 2024.

Here are the federal and provincial benefits and credits to look out for in the new year.

GST/HST Credit

The GST/HST credit is a tax-free quarterly payment designed to assist individuals and families with lower incomes in offsetting the Goods and Services Tax (GST) or Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) they incur. This credit may also encompass payments from provincial and territorial programs.

Eligibility for the GST/HST credit is automatic upon filing your taxes.

Canada Child Benefit (CCB)

The Canada Child Benefit (CCB) is managed by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and is a tax-free monthly allowance provided to qualifying families to assist with the expenses associated with raising children under the age of 18. The CCB may encompass the Child Disability Benefit and associated provincial and territorial programs, per the CRA.

Please note that starting on November 20, 2023, Canadians will be required to provide proof of birth when applying for the Canada Child Benefit.

Climate Action Incentive Payment (CAIP)

The CAIP, a tax-free benefit, is provided to assist individuals and families in mitigating the expenses associated with federal pollution pricing, the CRA said.

Eligible residents of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario can access this benefit, which comprises a basic amount and an additional supplement for those residing in small and rural communities.

To qualify for this credit, you must be a resident of Canada for income tax purposes at the commencement of the month when the CRA issues the payment. Additionally, eligibility requires residency in an applicable CAIP province on the first day of the payment month.

Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB)

Your 2024 OTB payments, determined by your 2023 income tax and benefit return, will be issued on the 10th of each month.

Advanced Canada Workers Benefit (ACWB)

According to the Canada Revenue Agency, the Canada Workers Benefit is described as “a refundable tax credit designed to assist individuals and families with low incomes who are actively employed.”

The maximum basic amount for the Canada Workers Benefit (CWB) is as follows:

For single individuals:

  • $1,428
    • The amount gradually decreases if your adjusted net income exceeds $23,495.
    • No basic amount is paid if your adjusted net income exceeds $33,015.

For families:

  • $2,461
    • The amount gradually decreases if your adjusted family net income exceeds $26,805.
    • No basic amount is paid if your adjusted family net income exceeds $43,212.

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) utilizes the following information to calculate your CWB refundable tax credit:

  • Marital status – eligible spouse
  • Province or territory of residence
  • Earned working income
  • Adjusted family net income
  • Eligible dependant
  • Eligibility for the disability tax credit

Alberta Child & Family Benefit (ACFB)

The Alberta Child and Family Benefit (ACFB) is a tax-free payment provided to families with children under 18 years old, per the CRA. For the period spanning July 2023 to June 2024, eligible recipients may qualify for the following amounts:

  • $1,410 ($117.50 per month) for the first child
  • $705 ($58.75 per month) for the second child
  • $705 ($58.75 per month) for the third child
  • $705 ($58.75 per month) for the fourth child

The benefit gradually decreases as family income exceeds $25,935. Families with adjusted net income between $25,935 and $43,460 may receive a partial benefit.

Additionally, families with a working income surpassing $2,760 may be eligible for the working income component:

  • $722 ($60.16 per month) for the first child
  • $657 ($54.75 per month) for the second child
  • $393 ($32.75 per month) for the third child
  • $130 ($10.83 per month) for the fourth child

This amount is reduced for adjusted family net incomes exceeding $43,460. ACFB payments, separate from the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) payments, are distributed in August, November, February, and May.

Canada Pension Plan

According to the CRA, the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) retirement pension is a monthly, taxable benefit designed to supplement your income during retirement. If you meet the eligibility criteria, you will receive this pension for the entirety of your life. To qualify, you must:

  • Be at least 60 years old
  • Have made at least one valid contribution to the CPP
